“My business has an active Facebook presence. Do we really need an Instagram presence too?”

It’s a common question. Because isn’t being active on one social media platform enough to reach your target community? Maybe . . . but likely not.

It’s highly probable that your community is diverse in their choice and use of social media platforms. And by “diverse” I’m referring to which platforms they choose to maintain profiles on, check, post and engage on. For example, I have an account on multiple social media platforms. I certainly do not use or maintain my presence on them equally.

And likely, neither does anyone else.

It’s worth determining which platforms your target community engages with the most over which platforms they simply have a presence on.

You might argue that nearly your entire target community is on Facebook, therefore making Instagram unnecessary. But do you know how often your community utilizes Facebook vs. other social platforms? It’s worth determining which platforms your target community engages with the most over which platforms they simply have a presence on. Just like strategic billboard placement, you want to place your message where there is the richest traffic.

Instagram is one of the largest growing platforms with over 700 million users. The majority of those users are active—meaning, they are opening up Instagram and engaging more than once per day. That’s a lot of traffic. That’s a lot of engagement.

Even among users that have profiles on both Facebook and Instagram, Instagram is fast becoming the primary account for use. That may be surprising. It certainly surprised me.

89% of respondents indicated that they use Instagram more often than Facebook.

I recently ran a poll asking respondents which platform, between Facebook and Instagram, they used more often. I was expecting a near 50-50 split. Of the 71 individuals that responded, only 8 said they used Facebook more frequently. I was shocked. 89of respondents indicated that they use Instagram more often than Facebook.

89%. Wow.

The potential for Instagram marketing cannot be ignored. With so many users logging in multiple times per day, the opportunities for getting your content in front of your target community are numerous.

Now, Facebook isn’t going anywhere. It’s here to stay. With over 2 billion active users the platform still remains the most popular even if the demographics of users are shifting. However, for your social media presence to be dynamic—you’ll want to spread your message across the platforms your target community is the most active on. And where that is—that’s worth finding out.
